La Gruta Isla Colon Tour

Very close to Bocas Town at Isla Colon, is located la Gruta, called like that by the locals. Is a natural cave that inside is totally original. But at the entry there is some kind of temple in honor of the virgin Mary because some time ago somebody told that the virgin was showing up there. But that was long time ago and today no religion is doing any kind of ceremony there but the stairs and sits remain there as a part of the history of Isla Colon. Once you are going inside the cave , you need to be very careful walking on top of some rocks because there is no floor or something adapted for visitors. That is the reason why safety gear will be provided like helmets with headlamps and gloves. Everybody should wear closed shoes, could be water shoes, boots.

You need to be aware that you will be wet since the beginning to the end of this tour, so is better to wear swimming clothing but is better to cover your body to avoid some scratches and not to cover for sun because is all the opposite here. At some point of the cave we are at total darkness and we depende totally on this headlamps that we bring with us. Inside the cave we can appreciate the rock formations, theater coming all over between cracks in the cave and some animals.

To see the biggest amount of animals in any kind of Nature tour we need to go as early as possible for two different reasons, first because the animals are more active at early mornings and second reason and also very important, we need to be the first group to enter this cave to be able to appreciate the life inside, because if another group arrive first all the animals will be hidden in our turn. We can find since the entry, strawberry poison dart frogs singing outside la Gruta and many species of birds and other anfibios. The water coming out of the cave is very clear and you can see different species of fish, even some big catfish.

Also is possible to see river shrimp that do not lookout all like the shrimps you know. They are bigger and they look like bogavantes with two large pincers. There are also hundreds or maybe thousands of bat of different species. The main difference between the bats is what is their food. Some of them only eat fruits, flowers or insects. While we are moving inside of the cave there is a part where Lego to the exterior and then we find that there is another cave with more extraordinary shapes inside. After the second cave we can continue going following a small trim that finish in a private property with 2 waterfalls. This is a beautiful short tour that we can enjoy in Bocas Del Toro just by moving in town by car.
