Description

One of the most popular destination in Bocas Del Toro. Starfish beach is located at Isla Colon. We will get there getting a boat from Bocas town to this Beach which is located exactly at the opposite side of the island. The travel takes only about 15 minutes with a good weather. The beach has white sand and crystal clear water is calm and warm with many coconut trees on the shore like the classic postcard picture. The water is so transparent that you can see the bottom without problem and then you understand why is called Starfish Beach. There are many of these especial animals which a very slow and passive but also because of that is in danger. Everybody feels tempted to touch the starfish and even grab them out of the water to take a picture, but this is terrible for them because they are very sensitive animals and only touching them is enough to kill them and when they are out of the water for few seconds that also could be the end of this beautiful creatures.

Once you are there at the Beach area you can see that there are a couple restaurants that offer a local Caribbean Menu like Fried Fish, Lobster, mix seafood and also chicken combined with rice with coconut, patacones or fried plantain with tomate salad. Also you can enjoy a variety of drinks, buy some souvenirs or receive a ni e relaxing massage with some tropical music as a background. We order the lunch and then we comeback to our boat to return to the wild side of the nature. We go direction to the Snyder Canal. This canal was made before the Panama Canal at the end of the IXX century by the Banana Company that was moving their fruits using this canal to make this transportation easier. However with time they opted to use other ways to move their products. For some time was used by the locals for public transportation but now with better roads on the mainland this canal is not as used as before. Only is used for few people to move around Bocas del Toro province but specially to appreciate the nature.

There is a great birds biodiversity here including some birds that we can not appreciate on the islands because is another kind of habitat. This canal is very long and connects with the river Changuinola that also comes back to the Caribbean Sea in one direction and in the other direction we go to Changuinola Town, one of the most important of this region and also very close to our Neighbor country Costa Rica. But our Tour is just a short trip to the Snyder Canal which is full of history and nature but we need to return to Isla Colon. But if the weather is good we have another option, to visit the Bird Island. Is a very special rocky island that is close to Isla Colon and in the middle has a shape like a gate in the middle of the Rock.

But the most impressive about this island is the big amount of birds that live there. This birds made this island their home and some of them are pelagic birds which one of their characteristics is that they stay always in open ocean and are rare close to the mainland. One of these very special species of birds is the Red Billed Tropicbird and there are other species like magnificent Frigate bird, Brown booby and Royal Tern. Then we can return to Isla Colon, after a close encounter with the nature and also with the local traditional places.
